International Desk: Many people have lost billions of dollars across Asia by falling into the trap of 'deepfake romance scam'. They extorted more than 4.6 million dollars (about 5.52 crores in cash) from the trapped men.
In a press conference on Monday (October 14), Hong Kong police revealed that many men in Asia have lost billions of dollars in such a deepfake romance scam. This information is known in a report of the international media CNN on Tuesday (October 15).
Hong Kong police say the male victim is not really in love with a woman; Instead, he fell into the trap of 'deepfake thrill scam'. The video was created by a criminal gang with the help of deepfake artificial intelligence technology. And they grabbed more than 4.6 million dollars (about 5.52 crores in cash) from the trapped men.
Image or video is distorted and artificially created to be perfect and promoted as real. This has become known in the tech world as 'deepfake'. In these videos, a person can be heard saying things that they did not say. They can be seen doing things they didn't do. Digitally distorted video content is more dangerous than traditional text and distorted images. These fake videos and information can attract more people.
It was informed in the press conference that they have already arrested more than two dozen members of the alleged fraudulent gang. These scammers have ensnared many men from Taiwan to Singapore and even India.
According to the police, 21 men and six women are among the arrested persons. The members of the fraud gang were arrested from a 4,000 square feet office in Hong Kong's Hung Hom area.
The arrested persons are aged between 21 and 34 years. These suspected fraudsters are mainly highly educated. Many of them hold bachelor's degrees in digital media and technology. While they were studying in different local universities, they were recruited in that criminal activity by the masterminds of the fraudsters.
Police also said the arrested suspects are believed to have worked with IT experts abroad to build a fake cryptocurrency platform. Through this platform, they forced the victims to invest money.
