One thousand seven hundred and 16 acres of land belongs to the forest department in Chala Mauza of Phulmali in Sagardighi Union of Ghatail, Tangail. But more than half of the land is cultivated with various crops including paddy. Apart from this, various structures including duplex buildings are being constructed in this mouza in exchange of money. Not only buildings, there are also allegations against the forest department of allotting plots to various factories for production in exchange of money. By giving money, the forest department helps not only to change the poles, but also to build new houses. A share of the illegal money goes from the forest workers to the pockets of the senior officials of the forest department.
Complaints of the common people, nothing can be done against the powerful, but the forest department has to pay money even to replace an old pole in the house of the landless and destitute people. And if he did not pay, a case was filed against him under the Forest Act. People of these areas are running away with numerous cases on their shoulders. For the common people, the forest department is a fear in person.
However, the officials of the forest department claim that they are trying to maintain the forest despite various restrictions. They also assured to take appropriate action if specific complaints are received. Locals claim that more than half of the forest land in this region has been taken over by the powerful.
