Chinese President Xi Jinping reminded of China's 'red line' and policies in a meeting with US President Joe Biden.

The two leaders held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru's capital Lima on Sunday (November 17).

According to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Xi Jinping emphasized respecting China's fundamental interests to maintain bilateral relations.

He said, 'It is normal to have differences and disputes between major countries like China and the United States. But it should not harm each other's basic interests'.

China's four 'red lines'

In his speech, Xi Jinping referred to four main issues as 'red lines':

Taiwan Issue: He said, there is no similarity between maintaining peace on the Taiwan issue and striving for 'Taiwan independence'.

Democracy and Human Rights: Discusses the need to respect China's democracy and human rights system.

China's right to development: He called for China's economic development and interests to be respected.

China's sovereignty: Xi Jinping reiterated China's claims to sovereign areas including the South China Sea.

"Conflict between emerging powers and established powers is not inevitable," Xi said. So a new cold war should not start. Because this is a battle in which no one can win'.

Biden's response

US President Joe Biden reiterated China's commitment to the 'One China Policy' and assured that the US would not try to change China's system or support Taiwan's independence.

He even mentioned that the US does not want to get involved in a new cold war.

Cooperation is strong

Both leaders emphasized on expanding cooperation and managing differences to stabilize bilateral relations. Xi Jinping said, 'respecting each other on the basis of equal partnership will bring stability'.

Importance of bilateral relations
