Boy Meets President, Saves the Day

A Wild Adventure Pairing a Young Hunter with the U.S. President

Big Game is a fun, fast-paced action-adventure that blends classic survival themes with outrageous political fantasy. Directed by Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander, this 2014 film offers a fresh spin on the genre by combining a coming-of-age tale with an explosive presidential rescue mission — all set against the rugged beauty of the Finnish wilderness. The premise is bold and borderline absurd, but it works because the film leans into the fun. When Air Force One is shot down over Finland, President William Alan Moore (played with signature gravitas and humor by Samuel L. Jackson) is forced to rely on an unlikely ally: Oskari, a timid 13-year-old boy (played by Onni Tommila) undergoing a traditional hunting rite of passage. With a terrorist plot unfolding around them, the two must navigate dense forests, evade elite mercenaries, and somehow survive until help arrives. What sets Big Game apart is its tone — it doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet it avoids becoming a parody. It strikes a balance between heartfelt and high-octane, with moments of quiet bonding between Oskari and the President interrupted by wild stunts, missile strikes, and helicopter chases. At its core, the movie is about courage and self-belief. Oskari, who starts off unsure and underestimated by his village, rises to the occasion in true hero fashion. His relationship with President Moore, who’s also out of his element in the wilderness, brings warmth and comedy to the story. The two characters grow together, learning that leadership and bravery can take many forms. The action scenes are creative and often humorous, with a distinctly retro flavor reminiscent of '80s and '90s adventure films. While the budget isn’t blockbuster-sized, the practical effects, sweeping mountain landscapes, and tightly directed set pieces deliver plenty of thrills. Big Game doesn’t aim to be a serious political thriller — it aims to entertain, and it does that with charm, energy, and heart. It's a movie that kids and adults can enjoy together, with enough action for thrill-seekers and enough sincerity to make you root for the underdog. If you're looking for a fun, offbeat action film with an unusual hero duo and a spectacular wilderness backdrop, Big Game is an adventure worth taking
