Providing 'humanitarian corridor' will threaten Bangladesh's sovereignty: Amir Khasru

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said

'If a humanitarian corridor is provided,

Bangladesh's sovereignty will be under threat. The people of the country will not accept it if sovereignty is sacrificed.'

He made these remarks while delivering the keynote address at a roundtable discussion on Bangladesh's Geopolitical Security: Perspectives on Humanitarian Corridors organized by the Center for Governance and Security Analysis at the CIRDAP conference in the capital on Saturday.

Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury also said that many in the interim government are saying that the Rohingya will be sent through the corridor. But during the time of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia, the Rohingya were not sent through the corridor.

In his keynote speech at the discussion event,

Nagorik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna said, the entire incident needs to be known. If the corridor is given, who will control it? Can Bangladesh control it? It seems that it cannot. This is a big security issue for the country. When the state deceives, the people will have to think differently. Referring to the interim government, he said, "To whom is it doing so?"

He further said, "Is this government going in the same direction as Sheikh Hasina, who has sacrificed the interests of the country for the interests of other countries?"

Speaking at the meeting, former Myanmar ambassador and security analyst Major General (retd) Shahidul Haque said, "The UN wanted a channel, they did not want a corridor. There is a difference between a channel and a corridor. The issue is a very good one. This kind of discussion is necessary for a nation."

The program was moderated by Professor Robayet Ferdous, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Dhaka University.

The keynote address was presented

by Colonel (Retd) Md. Jaglul Ahsan, Executive Director of the Center for Governance and Security Analysis.

He said that just as there are examples of conducting humanitarian activities, there is also a trend of 'neo-colonialism' such as entering a country by showing a "false flag" as an excuse for humanitarian activities. The humanitarian corridor is a great initiative to provide emergency food and humanitarian assistance to prevent famine in Rakhine State, but it involves the sovereignty and security of Bangladesh. He said that to ensure transparency in the matter, a decision should be taken after discussing it in Parliament during the political government.

In the roundtable discussion, AB Party Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju said, "We don't want another Rohingya. If we work on the corridor, we will have to work on a contractual basis. Such a decision should have been discussed with all political parties, not in secret."

President of the People's Rights Council, Nurul Haque Nur, said, "The main task of this government was to hold elections. There is no room for delaying the elections in the name of justice and reform. BNP is not alone, many parties want elections by December."

included Comrade Saiful Haque, General Secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party, Comrade Rajequzzaman Ratan, Deputy General Secretary of the Bangladesh Islamic Workers' Party, Dr. Hafizur Rahman Curzon, Professor of the Law Department of Dhaka University, Dr. Sajjad Hossain, Teacher of the Peace and Conflict Department, Advocate Humaira Noor, Joint Member Secretary of the National Citizens Party, and rights activist Michael Chakma.
