Government is 'showing off' in the name of reforms: Salahuddin Ahmed

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the

interim government is only

'showing off' in the name of 'reform' without taking any visible steps to hold elections by December.

He made these remarks at a discussion meeting at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in the capital on Saturday (May 31).

The Krishak Dal organized this event to mark the 44th death anniversary of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.

Salahuddin said, "

How many times will you inaugurate this drama of reform? Inaugurate in the first phase, then again in the second phase. Now another inauguration in the third phase! This is actually nothing but 'showing off' in the name of reform."

He said the chief advisor has called for another round of dialogue on June 2. 'We have already said - put everything that has been discussed together and present it to the nation. But you are just doing formalities, nothing is being done. What is the need for fresh talks on June 2?'

He added, "Ensuring justice for crimes against humanity should be a greater priority than reform—demanding justice for fascists should now be the highest priority."

Salahuddin complained that

the government had backed down from its previous promise to hold elections by December. "You said the elections would be held by December. Now you have backed down again—this is very unfortunate."

Salahuddin, who was kidnapped from his home in Uttara on March 10, 2015, under the guise of a spy, complained, "BNP leaders and activists have given blood, been tortured, imprisoned, and confined in a 'mirror house'. Are all these just stories? We have suffered all this as it is."

The party leader commented that BNP is moving towards restoring democracy, restoring voting rights, and building a society without discrimination.

Pointing to the chief advisor, Salahuddin added, "If you feel uncomfortable talking about our democratic rights, it is very disappointing. How much longer will you delay the elections in the name of reforms?"

Questioning the rationale for postponing the elections, he said, "There is no reasonable reason to delay the elections. You (Dr. Yunus) have no reason. If there is a reason not to hold the elections in December, present it to the nation."

He called reforms an ongoing process. He said that postponing elections using reforms as an excuse is not acceptable in any way. 'Reforms are never a finished task, they evolve according to the time and needs of the country. But that does not mean that you can use it as an excuse to postpone the election date.'

The discussion meeting,

chaired by Krishak Dal General Secretary Shahidul Islam Babul, was also attended by BNP acting chairman's advisor Mahdi Amin, executive committee member Tabith Awal and other Krishak Dal leaders.
