A mermaid trades her voice for love on land
The Little Mermaid (1989), directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, is a beloved Disney animated musical that redefined fairy tale storytelling for a new generation. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story, the film introduces audiences to Ariel, a spirited young mermaid with a longing for life beyond the sea. Ariel, voiced by Jodi Benson, is fascinated with the human world. Despite her father King Triton's warnings, she collects human artifacts and dreams of walking on land. Her fascination deepens when she saves and falls in love with Prince Eric, a human sailor. Determined to be with him, Ariel makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Ursula: she will give up her voice in exchange for legs and three days to win the prince’s love. What follows is a heartfelt journey of self-discovery, sacrifice, and courage. Ariel must navigate life on land—without her voice—while Eric remains unaware of her true identity. Meanwhile, Ursula has her own wicked plans to sabotage Ariel and take control of the sea. The film is a landmark in animation, featuring lush, underwater visuals and fluid, expressive character designs. It marked the beginning of the Disney Renaissance, an era of critically and commercially successful animated films that brought musical storytelling back into prominence. Alan Menken’s music, paired with Howard Ashman’s lyrics, adds timeless magic. Songs like “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea,” and “Kiss the Girl” are not just catchy—they are emotionally resonant, giving voice to Ariel’s dreams and the vibrant underwater culture around her. Ariel is one of Disney’s most memorable heroines—curious, brave, and willing to take risks for love and freedom. Her journey represents the desire to find one’s place in the world and make bold choices to pursue it, even at great cost. The film also includes lovable supporting characters: Sebastian, the anxious crab with a musical heart; Flounder, Ariel’s loyal fish friend; and Scuttle, the quirky seagull. Each adds humor and warmth, balancing the film’s darker moments with light-hearted charm. The Little Mermaid remains a treasured classic for its beautiful animation, unforgettable songs, and timeless message: follow your heart, even when the tides are against you.
