Twin earthquakes shake Türkiye

Twin earthquakes measuring 6.2 and 5.8 have struck Turkey.

At least 8 people were reported injured

in the earthquake that struck on Monday night and Tuesday morning local time.


The first earthquake struck at 11:17 p.m. local time on Monday and had a magnitude of 6.2, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said in a statement. The epicenter was 68 kilometers below the surface of the Dodecanese, a Greek island group bordering Turkey, on the Aegean Sea coast.


The first quake was followed by a second earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale early Tuesday morning, with its epicenter 18 kilometers below the surface of the Mediterranean coastal city of Marmaris, Turkey.


There were no immediate reports

of casualties or damage from the first tremor, but Marmaris Mayor Idris Akbiyik said eight people were injured in the city after jumping from windows or balconies onto the road during the quake.

 


Turkey has a history of powerfu

l and deadly earthquakes. In February 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 5,300 people in 11 provinces of Turkey.


Earlier, in 2020, a magnitude 7 earthquake struck the country. More than 1,400 people lost their lives in the event.
