Government presented budget

without discussing with political parties: BNP

BNP has alleged that the interim government

has presented the proposed budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year without consulting political parties. At the same time, the party has demanded reforms to the traditional budget process.

Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury made the remarks at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson's political office on Wednesday (June 4). The BNP organized the press conference to give its formal response to the proposed budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

Amir Khasru Chowdhury Mahmud said,

"Since there is no parliament or democratic government in the country now, we were hoping that the interim government would discuss with the political parties that are with the anti-fascist movement and announce the budget based on the opinions of the common people. But the government did not do so. He commented that the budget announcement was completely conventional."

Khasru said, "There is no reason to impose taxes on education. If BNP comes to power in the future, education taxes will be waived."

He said, "We have to think outside the box in the budget. There was an opportunity to break out of the traditional budget."

Regarding the budget process reform,

Amir Khasru said, "The existing constitutional procedures for budget approval, transparency and accountability will be ensured. Fundamental constitutional and procedural reforms will also be made to strengthen accountability and parliamentary oversight in Bangladesh. Strengthening parliamentary committees, transparency and public participation, and guidelines for cleaning up the mess of the pre-election caretaker government will be included in the comprehensive plan."

In response to a question, he said,

"On the one hand, there is inflation and on the other hand, people's income has decreased. In such a situation, increasing taxes will have an impact on the people. Therefore, the quality of life of the people should be the first goal of the budget. But we have been agitating for inequality. The budget is looking at the opposite direction."
