Chunarughat, Habiganj. Those involved claim that a group of tea workers killed the man.
The incident took place at around 10 pm on Wednesday in the Chanpur bus stand area of the upazila. Police have arrested two tea workers in this incident.
The deceased autorickshaw driver, Mortuz Ali (50), is the son of Rajab Ali of Nowani village in the upazila. The arrested persons have been identified as Nayan and Akash. Their home is in Chandpur tea garden.
Locals said that on Wednesday evening,
Mortuz Ali had an argument with some workers of Chanpur tea garden over picking up passengers at the CNG stand in Chunarughat municipality. Around 10 pm, Mortuz Ali went to Chanpur with the passengers. Upon receiving the news, some workers, incited by the garden leaders, arrested him and beat him up indiscriminately, seriously injuring him.
Later, when he was taken to the Upazila Health Complex, the doctor on duty declared Mortuz Ali dead. Upon receiving the information, Chunarughat police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue.
The incident sparked tension among
autorickshaw drivers. In the morning, hundreds of workers gathered at the Deorgach CNG stand to demand the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers of Mortuz Ali.
Chunarughat-Madhabpur Circle ASP Salimul Haque said, "The incident is very sad. Two people involved in the incident have been arrested. The police are working to arrest the rest. They will be arrested and brought to justice."
