Vikas is 'fueling' the rural economy

Ali Azam Mandal of Kumargari village in Palashbari upazila

Gaibandha lives in Dhaka. However,

he has a chicken farm in the village's Chattiantola market. He does business worth several lakhs of taka per month in this farm. He does most of his transactions through mobile banking service provider bKash.

Not only the farm, but there is also a shopping mall named Azam Super Market named after Ali Azam in that market. He has 10 shops there. Most of the money needed to run these shops is transacted through bKash.

Ali Azam said that he has people to

look after his farm and shops. However, he manages his income and expenses himself. It is not possible for him to come to the village every month to collect farm transactions and shop rent. As a result, he collects most of his rent through bKash. He also incurs expenses to run the farm and market. He meets those expenses through bKash.

Mashkur Mandal's shop is in Chhatiantola Bazar. Looking at the accounts, he said that about 250 people use bKash services from his shop every month. The monthly transaction is about 1.5 million taka.

Some of these traders work in different

parts of the country including Dhaka, Chittagong, and Sylhet. Some do business. Some of them say that they meet their family's expenses by transacting on bKash. Again, many in the villages have fish farms, chicken farms, and small businesses. They also do their transactions there on bKash.

Khalil Pradhan of Balabamunia village came to Mashkur's shop to withdraw money from bKash. He said that his son works in a garment factory in Chittagong. His son sends money to bKash every month. With this money, he starts farming and manages his family's expenses.
