গ রু খুবই উপকারী প্রাণী। চারটি পা ও একটি লেজ থাকলেও গরু পশু নয়, সম্মাননীয় ব্যক্তি। এ জন্য অনেকে আবার গরুকে ‘মাতা’ বলে ডাকে। কবিগুরু রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরও লিখেছেন, ‘মা-গো আমায় ছুটি দিতে বল।’ কিন্তু গুরুদেব বললেও কথাটা সম্পূর্ণ ঠিক নয়, গরু আসলে মায়ের চেয়েও বড়। গরুর গোবর হয়, মায়ের হয় না। মায়ের দুধে ছানা হয় না, গরুর দুধে হয়। মায়ের হাগু কোনও কাজে লাগে না, কিন্তু গোবর খুব উপকারী খাবার। প্রায়শ্চিত্তের সময় কাঁচা খেলে শরীরের উপকার হয়। রান্নার সময় ঘুঁটে বানিয়ে এবং চাষবাসে সার হিসেবে দিয়ে খাদ্যসমস্যার সমাধান হয়। মাটিতে গোবর দিলে তা থেকে ধান আমড়া রজনীগন্ধা ইত্যাদি নানা ফল ও ফুল ফলে। এই কারণে ফলের রাজার অন্য নাম ম্যাং-গো এবং ফুলের রানিকে গো-লাপ বলে।

গরু গোবর ছড়িয়ে এবং শিং দিয়ে গুঁতিয়ে পৃথিবীকে ফুলে ফলে ভর্তি করে রাখে। এখান থেকেই সংস্কৃতে ‘জননী জন্মভূমিশ্চ স্বর্গাদপি গো-রিয়সী’ কথাটি এসেছে। এর অর্থ হল, জননীরা জন্মভূমিতে থাকে, আর গরুরা স্বর্গে দাপাদাপি করে। এই জন্য ভগবানের অন্য নাম গো-বিন্দ। এ নিয়ে বাংলায় হাজার হাজার গান-কবিতা লেখা হয়েছে। তাদের একটির নাম গীত-গো-বিন্দ। গরুর স্ত্রীলিঙ্গ ‘গাই’। একটি বিখ্যাত বাংলা ভক্তিগীতির প্রথম লাইন ‘আমি বাংলায় গান গাই।’
পুজোকে ভক্তিমার-গো বলে, তাই গরুকে আমরা বিশেষ সম্মান দিই। ভাল লোকেদের আমরা বং-গো-ভূষণ বলে থাকি। ফর্সা মেয়েদের গো-রি বলা হয়, তাদের ভাল ভাল পাত্রের সঙ্গে বিয়ে হয়। পছন্দের জিনিস হারানোকে ‘গরু হারানো’ এবং প্রাণপণ খোঁজাকে ‘গরু খোঁজা’ বলা হয়।
