As of 6pm on Sunday (September 29), water flow at Dalia Point of Teesta Barrage, the country's largest irrigation project, was recorded, flowing below the danger level by 20 cm. And 33 cm above the danger level at Kaunia Point. Meanwhile, half a kilometer of Lalmonirhat Santahar railway track has been inundated.
As a result, the train has been running at a slow speed despite the risk throughout the day. Due to the increase in water pressure, half a kilometer railway track has sunk in Ratipur area of Gokunda Union of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila of Lalmonirhat Santahar Railway. However, still around ten thousand families in several unions of five upazilas of Lalmonirhat are waterlogged.
Lalmonirhat District Commissioner HM Rakib Haider said that we have visited the flooded area, about 10 thousand families of the district are under water. We are preparing their list with the help of representatives, 90 metric tons of rice has been allocated among flood affected families.
Shunil Kumar Roy, executive engineer of Lalmonirhat Water Development Board, said that the water level of Teesta has increased due to continuous rains and upstream floods. Char areas and some areas in the lower areas along the river banks have been flooded. He said that due to the decrease in the depth of the river, Nirmal is getting flooded with little water. He also said that the water in the river has started to decrease, if the snow starts to decrease, the river may break. If breakage starts, geo bags will be thrown to prevent breakage.
