Jumbangla Desk: A few days ago, tigers used to come from the Sundarbans to the locality for various reasons, including in search of food. Cattle was taken from the village. Terrified villagers used to beat the tiger to death. To overcome this situation, the forest department has placed nylon fencing in an area of about 40 km of Sundarbans to prevent tigers from entering the area. Another 20 km area of this fencing work is going on. Already in the Sundarbans of West Bengal, the forest department has benefited from the use of nylon fencing or nets.

Tiger entry into the locality

The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change approved the 'Sundarban Tiger Conservation Project' on March 23, 2022 to collect updated data on tigers and conserve Sundarbans tigers. The cost of the project is estimated at 35 crore 93 lakh 80 thousand taka. The duration of the project is till March 2025. Nylon fencing is being provided under this project.

According to forest department sources, sometimes tigers come into the locality in search of food and take livestock away. People have beaten and killed tigers that came to the locality several times. Tigers can easily enter the locality as several rivers and canals adjacent to the forest are filled up. Besides, sometimes wild boar and deer also come to the locality. In this situation, an initiative was taken to provide nylon fencing to prevent tigers and other wild animals from entering the locality. This work started at the field level in October last year.

Project Director and Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Sundarban West Forest Division. Abu Naser Mohsin Hossain said that fencing is being provided in the areas of Sundarbans where tiger-human conflicts are high. Already about 40 km of fencing has been completed in some areas including Dhansagar, Sharankhola, Kaikhali and Kailashganj. Another 20 km area is being fenced. In the Indian part of Sundarbans, the forest department of that country provided this fencing long ago.

He also informed that members of the Village Tiger Response Team have been engaged for fencing supervision. So that foresters or miscreants do not tear it. Instructions have been given to them to inform the forest department immediately if they tear anywhere.

Meanwhile, under the project, tiger census was conducted from January 1, 2023 to March this year using camera trapping method. 3 crore 26 lakh 96 thousand taka is spent on tiger census. On October 8, the Interim Government's Environment and Forest Advisor will officially announce the results of the tiger census in Dhaka. In the 2018 survey, there were 114 tigers in the Sundarbans, which was 106 in 2015. However, the number of tigers has increased this time, said the forest department.
