Tarique Rahman acquitted in all cases

A High Court bench has acquitted BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman

and his wife Zubaida Rahman in

a case of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income.Lawyers say that Tarique Rahman has been acquitted in all of these cases.

Her lawyer SM Shajahan said that the court has granted the appeal. This means that Zubaida Rahman has been acquitted of the conviction that was against her. At the same time, he said that Tarique Rahman has also been acquitted.

Ms. Rahman appealed against the three-year prison sentence in the undeclared wealth acquisition case.

On September 26, 2007, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against three people, including Tarique Rahman and Zubaida Rahman, at Dhaka's Kafrul Police Station.

A Dhaka court delivered its verdict in this case on August 2, 2023. That night, Tarique Rahman was sentenced to 9 years in prison and Zubaida Rahman to three years, along with a fine.

As part of the steps the government began taking regarding the cases of BNP leaders after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August last year, the Home Ministry issued a notification on November 4 last year suspending the sentence of Zubaida Rahman.

On May 6, when Zubaida Rahman

returned to Dhaka and applied to the High Court for forgiveness for the delay in filing the appeal, the court granted her request.

He then appealed and applied for bail, which was granted by the High Court. After the hearing, the court set the verdict for May 28.

SM Shajahan said that Tarique

Rahman was acquitted without appealing as a benefit of Zubaida Rahman's acquittal.

Tarique Rahman has been in London since 2008. From there, he is now leading his party BNP as the acting chairman. - BBC Bangla
