The body was recovered from the septic tank of the abandoned house of Awami League leader Rupa Rahman in Chhota Binnadayir village, south of Baghabari Mallapara in Rupbati Union of the upazila, on Wednesday morning. At the time of the recovery, the child's hands were tied. In addition, a towel was wrapped around her neck and white tape was applied to her nose and mouth.
The deceased Lamia was the daughter of Nazim Uddin and Rina Khatun of Sreeftalala village in Habibullahnagar union of Shahjadpur upazila. Both the husband and wife lived in Dhaka due to their jobs. While the child Lamia and her younger sister lived in the house of Nana Abdur Rashid in Binnadayir village. Lamia could not be found since last Tuesday afternoon.
Police and locals said that 10 years ago,
Nazim Uddin of Shriphaltala village in Habibullahnagar union of Shahjadpur upazila married Rina Khatun, daughter of Abdur Rashid of Binnadayir village. After that, two daughters including Lamia were born to them. Lamia is the eldest. The husband and wife both worked in a garment factory in Dhaka, leaving the two daughters at the house of their maternal grandfather Abdur Rashid.
Lamia had not been found since Tuesday afternoon. The child's maternal grandfather Abdur Rashid filed a general diary with Shahjadpur police station that night. And on Wednesday around 4 pm, the body of the child Lamia was recovered from the septic tank of an abandoned house in Binnadair village.
Locals said that after the fall of the Awami
League government on August 5, Rupa Rahman fled her home. After that, miscreants broke the doors and windows of her two-story house and looted the furniture. Since then, the house has become a den for gamblers and drug addicts.
Shahjadpur Police Station OC Aslam Ali said, "The girl was brutally tortured before being killed. Whether she was raped or not will be known after the autopsy report is received. Preparations are underway to file a case in this incident. Efforts are underway to identify those involved in the murder."
