Cattle market closes road in Comilla's

Comilla's Debidwar-Chandina road has been closed for

market. The cattle market was set

up in the Punora area of the road since Wednesday morning. Vehicular movement on the road remained closed throughout the day, causing extreme hardship to people heading home for Eid.

Meanwhile, the local administration has not taken any action against those involved in illegally blocking roads and setting up markets. The issue has generated widespread criticism in the area.

It is learned that although the Debidwar-Chandina road belongs to the Roads and Townships Division, it is a connecting road from the 'Comilla-Sylhet' regional highway to the 'Dhaka-Chittagong Highway' at Chandina via Debidwar. Hundreds of vehicles ply on the road throughout the day.

People travelling on that road

said that the Punora cattle market moved onto the Debidwar Chandina road. Buyers and sellers started conducting their activities on the road. This created a traffic jam of about five kilometers. Although there was traffic jam throughout the day, the police or the local administration did not take any action in this regard.

Municipality market inspector Alamgir Hossain said, "We have leased the market to set up a market for cattle and goats for this sacrifice. It is not right to set up a market by closing the road. We have warned the leaseholder Ershad Mia."

In this regard, Circle ASP Mohammad Shahin Mia said, "I have received the news of the market being run by closing the road. We have sent forces there to take necessary measures."

In this regard, Municipal

Administrator and Debidwar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Raihanul Islam said, "The market cannot be operated in any way by blocking roads or causing public suffering. We will take action after looking into the matter."
