Finance Minister Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed announced the amendment through a recorded speech on Monday (June 2).
Currently, by declaring, a traveler can bring 117 grams or 10 bhoris of gold as many times a year as they want and have to pay a tax of 40,000 taka.
As a result of this change, no passenger will be able to bring gold under baggage rules more than once a year.
Although commercial gold import is permitted, leaders of the Bangladesh Jewelers Association (BAJUS) say that bringing gold under baggage rules is comparatively cheaper than importing. Therefore, many are more interested in using baggage rules through passengers instead of importing.
There are even allegations
that many smugglers are taking advantage of this opportunity.
Although the government allowed commercial gold imports into the country in 2018, there was little response.
However, more than 100 kg of gold is entering the country every day under baggage rules, which, although legal, remains outside the import accounting and control.
It is worth noting that according to the previous baggage rules, a female passenger could bring 100 grams of gold jewelry duty-free.
