Russia ready for 'largest' prisoner

Vladimir Medinsky, an adviser to Russian President

Vladimir Putin, said that preparations

have been completed for an exchange of 1,200 prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine. It could begin between June 7 and 9.

"We estimate that there will be an exchange of about 1,200 prisoners from both sides. And this is going to be the largest prisoner exchange between the two countries ever," Medinsky said.

He made the remarks while briefing President Putin about the recent peace talks held in Istanbul, Turkey.

Medinsky also said that Russia, on its part, has submitted a two-stage draft peace memorandum, which includes terms for a long-term peace and terms for an immediate ceasefire.

On the other hand, Ukraine has said that negotiations must begin immediately through a ceasefire. Only then can preparations be made for a conference between the heads of state.

In this regard, Medinsky said that heads of state should be called to work on all issues before discussing them and then make a final decision.

Russia has announced that it will

soon hand over the bodies of 6,000 Ukrainian soldiers to Ukraine and will also receive the bodies of its dead soldiers from Ukraine.

Medinsky also said that while humanitarian issues are secondary to the discussions, an effective peace channel has been launched. Russia wants to work on a process to establish a lasting peace, not a ceasefire.

Medinsky also commented

that "the ball is now in their court on other matters."

Previously, the two sides exchanged 205 prisoners each in the first round. This time they have agreed to exchange a larger number, especially the youngest and most seriously injured prisoners. Source: Anadolu
