For the third time, after 54 years of the Great Liberation

War in Bangladesh, the definition

of a freedom fighter has been changed. In the face of new controversy in various news reports, the interim government has clarified that leaders of the Mujibnagar government, including Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Tajuddin Ahmed, will continue to be recognized as freedom fighters. BBC Bangla reports.

However, MNAs or National Assembly members elected in the 1970 elections will be considered as 'associates of the liberation war'. The new definition is severely excluding many National Assembly members or politicians from the recognition of freedom fighters. Who are these politicians, why did the interim government change the definition of freedom fighter, and what is the purpose of it - these are the questions that arise.

The MNAs and MPAs, who were

considered freedom fighters by the National Assembly and Provincial Assembly, were largely involved in the politics of the Awami League at the time, and many analysts have questioned whether the definition created by the interim government was changed out of political considerations.

In addition, the Mujib Bahini, formed under the leadership of Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni during the Liberation War, later took the name Bangladesh Liberation Force, and members of this force are also excluded from the recognition of freedom fighters according to the new definition.

Government sources say that the

force and its members will be recognized as 'associates of the liberation war'. However, the names of groups in this country that have been retained in this latest definition as opponents of Bangladesh's liberation war include the name of Jamaat-e-Islami.
