What's so special about 'Punjab 95'?
In 'Punjab 95', Diljit plays the role of Yashwant Singh Khalra. In the nineties, Yashwant was a bank manager in Punjab. He was also a social activist. While investigating what happened to the family of an acquaintance of his, Yashwant discovered a big conspiracy. He alleged that during the 80s, the Punjab Police had killed and disappeared about 25,000 innocent Sikh youth in the name of killing terrorists.
At that time, a movement began in Punjab, whose ideologues began an armed struggle for the independence of Punjab. The main demand of this movement was to establish Punjab as a separate state 'Khalistan', where the Sikhs would be able to identify themselves as a sovereign nation.
In 1984, the Indian Army killed a large number of Khalistanis in the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar in Operation Bluestar. A few months after this incident, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her Sikh security guards. The killing of Sikhs began across the country. The Punjab Police took steps to end the Khalistani movement.
At this time, Yashwant started making
noise about the atrocities and murders committed illegally by the police in Punjab. After investigating, Yashwant came to know that the Punjab Police killed 2,000 of its own personnel, in addition to ordinary people. The families of these dead people have not yet known where they were killed and buried or burned. In the film, Suvinder Vicky plays the role of a tyrannical police officer. Arjun Rampal plays the role of a lawyer.
Yashwant was last seen in Amritsar in 1995.
According to witnesses, Yashwant was cleaning his car. At that time, the police came and took him away in a car. He was subjected to a terrible torture by the Punjab Police. In 2005, a Patiala court convicted six policemen for kidnapping and killing Yashwant. All of them were sentenced to life imprisonment.
