Along with the UN Secretary-General, the UN agency dedicated to Palestinian refugees, the United Nations Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNROA) and the UN Court International Court of Justice (ICJ) have also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Every year, the world's most prestigious prize, the Nobel Prize, is awarded to people who have made special contributions in these five fields - peace, literature, physics, chemistry and economics. The Swedish Royal Academy handles nominations and awards for the remaining 4 categories, except peace; And the Norwegian Nobel Committee is responsible for nominating and awarding Nobel Peace Prize candidates. The names of the Nobel laureates will be announced from October 11.

Former Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky were among potential nominees for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, sources said. But later both were dropped.

The reason for canceling Alexei Navalny — he's dead. And Vladimir Zelensky is excluded because he is the president of a country at war.

Henrik Urdal, director of the Peace Research Institute, a Norwegian think tank, told Reuters, “There have been conflicts in different parts of the world for a long time. We see the Russia-Ukraine war entering its third year, Sudan languishing in civil war for the past year and a half, and Israel and Hamas in the Middle East engaged in nearly a year of deadly battle to destroy each other.”

"The Nobel Committee is prioritizing this year's Peace Prize for those who or organizations are working tirelessly to stop violence and bloodshed in these conflict situations. That's what our analysis says."

According to Nobel Peace Prize-winning historian Ashley Sevin, the global rule of law that was established around the world after World War II has been severely damaged in recent years. Therefore, the Norwegian Nobel Committee is nominating those who are contributing to sustaining this global law and world order for this year's peace prize. As such, the main competition for the award will be between the UN Secretary-General and ICZ.

Why do blind people wear dark glasses?

"At the moment Antonio Guterres is the top symbol of the United Nations. On the other hand, the UN Court ICJ is responsible for the protection and enforcement of all international laws related to humanitarian issues. This work is very important," Ashley Sevin told Reuters.
