SAAB: Swedish Air & Road

Aviation-inspired cars with safe design

SAAB, originally founded in 1937 as an aerospace company (Svenska Aeroplan AB), brought its aeronautical expertise to the automotive world in 1945. Known for its quirky yet intelligent designs, SAAB carved out a unique identity by focusing on safety, innovation, and individuality. The brand quickly became known for producing cars that looked different, felt different, and often performed differently than their mainstream rivals. The first SAAB car, the 92, debuted in 1949 and set the tone for decades of aerodynamic, driver-focused design. Its teardrop shape and front-wheel-drive layout were unusual at the time, reflecting SAAB’s roots in aircraft engineering. This influence continued in later models like the 900 and 9000, where wraparound windshields, dashboard ergonomics, and turbocharged engines became hallmarks. SAAB was also a pioneer in safety. Long before it became an industry standard, SAAB was integrating features like crumple zones, side-impact protection, and cabin air filtration systems. The brand’s commitment to innovation made it a favorite among intellectuals, professionals, and those who valued substance over flash. In the 1980s and ’90s, SAAB’s turbocharged engines gained fame for their smooth power delivery and surprising performance. Its aircraft heritage showed in every detail—from the ignition switch between the seats to the clean, cockpit-like interiors. Though SAAB ceased car production in the early 2010s, its legacy lives on. SAAB remains a symbol of thoughtful design, safety-first engineering, and Swedish ingenuity—loved by loyal fans around the world.
