Quirky, rugged bikes with cult following
Hodaka was a unique motorcycle brand born from a Japanese-American partnership between Hodaka Industrial Co. in Japan and PABATCO (Pacific Basin Trading Company) in Athena, Oregon. Operating from 1964 to 1978, Hodaka produced nearly 150,000 motorcycles, leaving an indelible mark on the off-road motorcycling scene. Initially, Hodaka manufactured engines for Yamaguchi motorcycles. After Yamaguchi's bankruptcy in 1963, PABATCO, seeking to continue in the motorcycle business, collaborated with Hodaka to design and produce complete motorcycles. PABATCO handled design and engineering, while Hodaka managed manufacturing and assembly. This collaboration led to the creation of distinctive models like the Ace 90, Super Rat, Combat Wombat, and Road Toad, known for their performance and whimsical names. Hodaka's motorcycles were celebrated for their lightweight design, durability, and affordability, making them popular among off-road enthusiasts and racers. The brand's innovative approach included features like patented constant-mesh gear engagement systems and a focus on rider-friendly ergonomics. Despite their popularity, Hodaka ceased operations in the late 1970s due to factors like unfavorable exchange rates, shifting market demands, and economic challenges. However, the brand's legacy endures, with a dedicated fan base and annual "Hodaka Days" events in Athena, Oregon, celebrating these iconic trail bikes.
